Port Hedland recently came alive with two incredible community events that showcased the talent, leadership, and spirit of our local Aboriginal community. Hosted by Hedland Aboriginal Strong Leaders in partnership with Julyardi Aboriginal Corporation, these events brought together families, Elders, and young people for unforgettable experiences.
The Hedland NAIDOC Opening Concert & Awards was a vibrant celebration of Aboriginal culture and achievement. Community members gathered to enjoy an evening of music, dance, and storytelling that highlighted the richness of local Aboriginal traditions. The event also honoured outstanding individuals and organisations who have made remarkable contributions to the community, recognising leadership, dedication, and cultural preservation. Attendees left inspired, with a renewed sense of pride in the community and its ongoing commitment to celebrating Aboriginal culture.
Following the NAIDOC celebrations, the community turned its energy to the Nothing But Net: Children’s Basketball Event. Designed for children of all ages, this sporting event encouraged teamwork, fitness, and fun, while connecting young people with positive role models from the Hedland Aboriginal Strong Leaders team. The basketball event wasn’t just about sport, it was a celebration of youth, health, and community connection. Families came together to cheer on the players, and participants were supported in developing skills both on and off the court.
Both events were made possible through the leadership of the Hedland Aboriginal Strong Leaders and the support of Julyardi Aboriginal Corporation. By combining cultural celebration with youth engagement, these events reinforced the strength, resilience, and unity of the Port Hedland community. The NAIDOC concert and awards, alongside the children’s basketball event, are shining examples of how culture, sport, and community leadership can come together to create positive experiences for everyone.
